I write, teach, research and practice on the borders between literature, drama, film, media and language studies at the University of Kent (and often at home). I am co-director of the University’s newly-established Centre for Creative and Practice Research. My interests are broad, but if I had to boil them down I'd be left with: play- and screenwriting and creative writing in general, film and media practice, fictional technique, creative heritage, the relationship between narratives and identity, traditional music, cognitive approaches to the Arts and Humanities, Nordic literature, film and culture and stylistics-based approaches to creative writing and creativity in general. I also like world-building. As well as my own fiction and drama, I have published on contemporary British and Irish fiction, on literary stylistics, travel literature and innovative perspectives on creative practice.

Current creative-practice projects:

The Plant: an Arts Council England-funded play with music and sequence of short films exploring societal divisions in the wake of Brexit and Covid-19.

Hulked: a creative heritage project exploring the stories, histories and songs of the Thames Barges though film, writing, music, performance and a digital soundwalk along the River Medway. This project is also funded by Arts Council England.

Runes: a project funded by Creative Estuary investigating and re-imagining the roots of Thames Estuary place names though digital art, multimedia installations and creative writing.
