I write, I teach and I research on the border between literature and language studies at the University of Kent (and sometimes at home). My interests are broad, but if I had to boil them down I’d be left with: fictional technique, literary representations of dialect (which is to do with fictional technique anyway), the relationship between narratives and identity, Nordic literature and culture and stylistics-based approaches to creative writing (fictional technique again) and creativity in general. I also like world-building. And brackets.
As well as my own fiction, I have published on contemporary British and Irish fiction, on literary stylistics, travel literature and innovative perspectives on creative practice. For full lists, see my academic profile.
